His work has been showcased widely across the UK and internationally, including exhibitions at Sotheby’s London, The Koppel project, The Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, and the CICA Museum in South Korea. Recent exhibitions include the BEEP Painting Biennial at Elysium Gallery (Cardiff, 2024) and Anticipation with KNST Collective at SET Ealing (London, 2025).
Currently, Macneil is exhibiting in 'Seasons' at the Addenbrooke gallery in Cambridge and is showcasing several works through _Art_List_ in Geneva, Switzerland.
Macneil approaches painting with a sense of immediacy, aiming for the viewer to take in all the visual information at once. Rather than depicting light and shadow through traditional means, he uses colour and tone to evoke these elements, often drawing on the ephemeral qualities in nature, using water, clouds landscapes, reflections and mirages to jump start his paintings.
At the heart of his practice is a desire for the paintings to feel light and unburdened. By intentionally "dropping the dead weight," Macneil seeks to strip away excess and avoid a sense of heaviness, leaving behind work that feels expansive, fluid, and vibrantly alive.
